This training is designed to help practitioners better understand how to keep disabled children and young people safe. It focuses on recognising additional risks, improving communication, and ensuring that children’s voices are heard.
The training will support staff to respond confidently to safeguarding concerns, understand local processes, and work effectively with other professionals. It also highlights the importance of adapting practice to meet individual needs and providing the right support at the right time.
By the end of this training, practitioners will be able to:

Understand the additional safeguarding risks faced by disabled children and young people

Recognise signs of harm or abuse and take appropriate action

Know when and how to make a referral, including understanding local pathways and thresholds

Use a range of communication methods to ensure the child’s voice is heard, including non-verbal approaches where needed

Adapt their practice to support children with sensory impairments, including visual and hearing needs

Understand safeguarding risks within the home, including how adaptations and support (such as Disabled Facilities Grants) can improve safety

Recognise the impact of carer stress and fatigue, and understand how short breaks and support services can reduce risk

Understand basic principles of mental capacity when working with disabled children and young people

Work effectively with other professionals, recognising the importance of strong multi-agency working to keep children safe
